President Donald Trump scored his highest job approval rating yet with 49% in a Gallup poll, which also indicated that most Americans favor acquitting him in his impeachment trial.

Trump, whose impeachment trial is expected to end after a vote on Wednesday, has experienced an improved rating with Republicans and independents, while but Democrats remain overwhelmingly unfavorable.

  • 49% approve overall.
  • 50% disapprove overall.
  • 1% have no opinion.
  • 94% of Republicans approve.
  • 7% of Democrats approve.
  • 42% of independents approve.

Gallup notes that the gap between Democrats and Republicans is 87-points, the largest measured in any poll of theirs to date, beating the previous record that Trump and former President Barack Obama jointly held by a single point.

The poll also found that:

  • 53% of Americans approve of the U.S. attack that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani.
  • 63% approve of Trump’s handling the economy.
  • 47% approve of Trump's work on foreign affairs.
  • 50% approve of his job on foreign trade.

These are Trump's highest ratings on foreign affairs and foreign trade in a Gallup poll. However, voters remain divided on whether he should be reelected, though that number has risen to 50% from 41% in a Gallup poll taken just before the 2018 midterm elections.

Gallup notes that if Trump’s ratings spike is due to a backlash against impeachment, then these numbers could fall once the trial ends, as happened with former President Bill Clinton a few months after his acquittal in 1999.

Soon after the Gallup numbers came to light, mTrump took to Twitter to crow about his approval rating. His post did not cite Gallup and the numbers he included did not line up precisely with Gallup's:

"My Approval Rating in the Republican Party = 95%, a record! Big Iowa win. Approval Rating overall = 53%, a new high. With our great Economy and other major successes, would be 20 points higher without the phony Witch Hunts and Hoaxes???"
