Former Rep. Gabby Giffords, D-Ariz., is establishing a tech council to assist elected officials looking to pass gun laws, Axios reports.

"Now is the time to come together, be responsible Democrats, Republicans, everyone," Giffords said at the Lesbians Who Tech Summit in San Francisco, California.

Giffords, who survived an attempted assassination in 2011, has become a staunch advocate for gun control.

"Gabby and I have made it our mission to try to bring back some sanity on an issue that has defined our country in the worst of ways," her husband, former NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, said at the conference. "We have mass shootings at a level in this country compare to almost no other nation."

The political organization established after the shooting, Giffords, told The Associated Press on Friday that it will spend at least $10 million on the upcoming midterm elections.

"A big part of our political program is going to be lifting these voices up and making sure voters are hearing directly from students who are literally protesting for their own lives," said Peter Ambler, executive director of Giffords. "Our responsibility as an organization dedicated to safer gun laws is to take this extraordinary amount of grassroots enthusiasm you see around the country, this outrage and anger in the aftermath of Parkland shooting, and channel it toward 2018."
