Mass shooting survivor and former Rep. Gabby Giffords, R-Ariz., decried the deadly attack on a Maryland newsroom Thursday and congressional inaction to "address this uniquely American crisis."

In a statement reacting to the mass shooting at The Capital Gazette in Annapolis, where five people were killed and several others injured,  Giffords said "reporters shouldn't have to hide from gunfire while doing their jobs."

"A summer intern in the newsroom shouldn't have to tweet for help," she stated. "We shouldn't have to live in a country where our lawmakers refuse to taken any action to address this uniquely american crisis that's causing so much horror annd heartbreak on what feels like a daily basis. This is not normal."

She blamed the lack of a solution on Congress.

"Americans are demanding that their lawmakers pass effective laws that can protect our communities and stop dangerous people from accessing guns, but this Congress refuses to listen," she said.

"We should be outraged. And we should be making plans to hold them accountable. I'm ready to stand with voters and make our voices heard loud and clear in November."

Giffords was shot in the head and critically wounded when a lone gunman opened fire at a constituent event in Arizona in January 2011 — and has been a major advocate for gun control in the wake of mass shootings.
