The Freedom Caucus is putting the finishing touches on its own tax proposal that would be sure to inflame its already contentious relationship with congressional leadership, Axios reported.

Caucus chair Rep. Mark Meadows, R-NC, is expected to soon announce the conservative group's plan, which, according to Axios, includes:

  • Reduces the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 16 percent, a favorite of President Donald Trump's.
  • Doubles the standard deduction for individuals.
  • Abandons revenue neutrality, the fiscal tenet that cuts in one area must be offset by increases in another.

The third pillar seems odd, coming from a group of fiscal conservatives, and taken together, the proposal is designed to ding House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, part of the "Big 6" who secretly have been crafting their own plan in conjunction with the White House, Axios reported.

"It appears that the whole plan is another example of the Freedom Caucus setting unachievable goals that they know leadership can't deliver rather than trying to make law," one Republican told Axios. "It makes me wonder why these guys run for Congress if they don't want to get things done."
