Frank Luntz: Trump Scored 'Minor Victory'; Biden 'Won the War'

President Donald Trump scored a "minor victory" during Thursday night's debate with Democrat nominee Joe Biden and may attract some undecided voters, but he still doesn't have enough time to overcome the former vice president's polling leads, Republican pollster and strategist Frank Luntz said Friday.

"In the end, I think Joe Biden won the war," said Luntz on CNBC's "Squawk Box," even though he does think Trump's performance will narrow the close race a bit.

Even if the polls are wrong like they were in 2016 when Trump defeated Hillary Clinton, it's still "virtually impossible" for the president to win reelection, as Biden's lead is large enough to overcome any margin of error, Luntz added.

He also pointed to the candidates' answers to the last question in Thursday's debate about what they'd say in a potential inauguration address to Americans who did not vote for them as proof that Biden appears poised for a win.

Trump slammed Biden, answering that "if he gets in, you will have a depression the likes of which you've never seen. Your 401(k)s will go to hell, and it'll be a very very sad day for this country."

Biden, however, said he'd say that "I represent all of you. Whether you voted for me or against me, I'm going to make sure you're represented. I'm going to give you hope."

Luntz also said his focus group after the debate once again said they didn't like Trump, as they did after last week's town halls. They were also concerned about Biden's policies after he didn't make an effort to clarify his proposals, said Luntz.
