Rep. Virginia Foxx holds a slight lead over other Republicans in next year's North Carolina U.S. Senate primary, according to a survey from Public Policy Polling.

The poll of 500 state voters, 366 of them Republicans, gave Foxx 15 percent support, followed by state Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry with 14 percent, and state Senate leader Phil Berger and Rep. Renee Ellmers, each with 10 percent.

Meanwhile, incumbent Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan tops all potential Republican challengers for her seat except Berry. They tie at 45 percent each, according to the poll taken May 17-19. Against Foxx, Hagan leads 49-42 percent.

"Although she doesn't receive as much attention as some of the other potential candidates, Cherie Berry is currently the Republican who polls strongest against Kay Hagan," Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling, said in a statement.

"She’s a rare North Carolina politician who is seen in a favorable light by both Democrats and Republicans."
