Stuart Varney, the host of Fox Business' "Varney & Company," said he blames former president Barack Obama for a turn in American politics toward socialism.
"He is largely responsible for the left turn in American politics over the eight years of his presidency," Varney told Monday's "Fox & Friends," The Daily Caller reported.
Varney said he left England in the 1970s because it was "a socialist economy which offered no hope for anybody who wanted to climb the food chain."
The host said academics on college campuses are fueling the push toward socialism.
"I think it's my generation, which now runs the universities," Varney said in the interview. "It's the campuses, it's the academics that are doing it. Look, it's fueled by a sense of jealousy. You've got it. I don't. I want it. Give it to me now. That's socialism."
A group of Democrats within the Democratic Party are leading the push toward socialism, Varney said.
"Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Keith Ellison, they're mainstream Democrats."
That group wants to "tax the rich, single payer medical systems, open borders," Varney said in the interview.
Varney referenced in the interview a group called the Democratic Socialists of America, a group of dozens of Democratic candidates in the midterm elections that are embracing the socialist title, The New York Times reported.
