Steven Groves, the one-time chief of staff to United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, is joining the White House legal team, Politico reported.
The website noted the hiring of Groves comes as special counsel Robert Mueller is preparing to interview White House aides.
Groves will serve as deputy to White House special counsel Ty Cobb, who is overseeing the administration response to Mueller's probe into Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential race, Politico reported.
Groves has previously worked as a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation and as senior counselor for the Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.
His resignation as chief of staff to Haley was announced last month, Bloomberg reported.
