Poll: 52 Percent of Florida Voters Age 50-Plus Approve of Trump

A majority of voters age 50 and above in Florida approve of President Donald Trump, reported a poll by Politico and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

In the poll:

  • 52 percent of voters age 50-plus approve of Trump.
  • 44 percent of those voters disapprove of Trump.
  • 4 percent had no opinion.

Older voters who are economically secure are a reliable source of Republican votes, an accompanying Politico report said.

The state’s Republicans believe that older voters, who are most likely to vote in midterm elections, are increasingly more likely to move to Florida and to support Trump, the report said.

"They want an America that’s a little more like it was when they were growing up, and that’s what Trump is offering," said Rep. Daniel Webster, the area’s Republican congressman.

"We’ve got old-school values. We take pride in America here. Trump gets people like us," said former Marine Joe Campbell, age 78, Politico reported.

Democrats face an uphill battle in Florida where more Republicans registered to vote in 2017 than Democrats, as retiring baby-boomers surged into the state, the report said.

The Democrats will have little chance to win the Senate majority if Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., the only Democrat in a statewide Florida office, cannot keep his spot against Rick Scott, the state’s current Republican governor.

Heavy turnout among older voters could also keep Democrats from flipping a number of Republican seats in Congress, which would keep the Democrats away from a majority there.

Older Republicans in the state are confident about the 2018 midterm elections, the report said. "It’s a numbers game, and people in communities like ours are very good about voting," said Sumter County’s GOP chairman, John Calandro, Politico reported.
