President Barack Obama’s deficiencies, especially when it comes to budget policy, hand Republicans a huge political gift, says Alvin Felzenberg, a longtime government official who now teaches at the University of Pennsylvania.
Obama has given Republicans “1) the opportunity to develop a strong farm team; and 2) a unifying issue on which to run in 2012 and beyond,” Felzenberg
writes on Politico.
“When Obama took office, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and multiple other states had Democratic governors. … As a result of Obama's overreaching and incompetence, any number of these new faces, especially in the Northeast and Midwest, could make a credible presidential possibility.”
Other Republican governors do too, Felzenberg writes. “In contrast to the president, all of these governors have shown they know how to manage and how to bring budgets into balance. Within the GOP, the governors not only dominate the debate, but own it.”
