Allen Weisselberg, the longtime chief financial officer for the Trump Organization, has been subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury in the criminal investigation of Michael Cohen, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
Citing "people familiar with the investigation," the Journal disclosed that Weisselberg "is considered a witness in the investigation" of President Donald Trump's former attorney.
However, "it isn't known whether he has already appeared before the grand jury or what questions prosecutors … have had for him," the Journal disclosed, adding that "the date of the subpoena couldn’t be determined."
A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan, which is investigating Cohen, declined to comment.
In addition, Weisselberg and a Trump Organization representative did not respond to requests for comment from the Journal.
Cohen, 51, is being probed for possible campaign finance law violations regarding a $130,000 payment to adult-film star Stormy Daniels over an alleged affair with President Donald Trump 12 years ago.
Prosecutors are also investigating Cohen for possible bank and wire fraud issues in his business dealings.
No charges have been filed and Cohen has denied wrongdoing. Trump has also denied the Daniels allegations.
According to the Journal, Weisselberg, 70, who is also executive vice president of the Trump Organization, "was once described by a person close to the company as 'the most senior person in the organization that's not a Trump.'"
Shortly before Trump was inaugurated as president in January 2017, he turned over control of his financial assets and business interests to his sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, and Weisselberg.
His ties to the Trump family date back to the 1980s, when Weisselberg worked for the real estate firm owned by the president's father, Fred Trump.
He later came to the Trump Organization, where he reported directly to Donald Trump and worked in Trump Tower, the Journal reported.
