The FBI had largely followed a suggestion from the Justice Department to not take any public action on any cases involving presidential candidates Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump before the election, and held to that promise until FBI Director James Comey on Friday sent a letter to Congress saying his agency was looking into Clinton's emails again, The New York Times reported.
The cases the FBI are looking into include former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort's business dealings in Ukraine, where he has advised politicians, including former President Viktor F. Yanukovych.
Manafort told the Times there is no FBI investigation on him and stories suggesting otherwise are "an outrageous smear being driven by" Democrats hoping to deflect attention from Clinton's email probe.
Another investigation involves the Clinton's connection to foreign donors to the Clinton Foundation. The agency has opted to issue no subpoenas until after the election.
