Two officials mentioned in controversial text messages by FBI personnel once assigned to the Trump-Russia probe are stepping down, according to Politico.

FBI Assistant Director for Public affairs Mike Kortan is retiring next week, an FBI spokeswoman said. And David Laufman, chief of the Justice Department's Counter Intelligence and Export Control Section, has resigned.

The two were discussed in text messages by senior FBI Agent Peter Strzok and FBI attorney Lisa Page, Politico noted. President Donald Trump and GOP lawmakers say the texts prove bias in the Justice Department and FBI.

But while the text messages between Strzok and Page contained some derogatory mentions of Trump, that same sentiment was not attributed to Koran and Laufman, Politico said.

The website noted there was no indication the departures were related to the texts.

In fact, the texts indicate Strzok and Page did not hold the two officials in high-esteem.

"Kortan majorly screwed up," an April 2016 text from Page said.

A Strzok text from March 2016 said: "I am getting aggravated at Laufman."

Fox News described Kortan as a confidant of former FBI Director James Comey.

He had worked for the FBI for 33 years.

The Washington Post reported Laufman, had once helped oversee the probes of Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server and Russian interference in the presidential election.
