People inside the Justice Department expect Attorney General Jeff Sessions to fire former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe before Friday, The New York Times reports.

McCabe has been a frequent target of President Donald Trump. He is due to officially retire on Sunday, but Sessions is reviewing a formal recommendation to dismiss him. His ouster would jeopardize his pension after 21 years at the FBI, according to the newspaper.

McCabe was caught up in an internal review, including an examination of his 2016 decision to allow FBI officials to talk with reporters about a probe into the Clinton Foundation. Now, the Justice Department's inspector general found he was not forthcoming during the review, the Times reported.

The report, which has not been released, sparked an FBI disciplinary process resulting in the termination recommendation.

McCabe also was involved in the investigation into the Trump campaign's ties to Russia and is a potential witness to determine whether Trump tried to obstruct justice, the Times reported.

Sources tell the newspaper that although they expect McCabe to be fired, no decision has been made yet. And A Justice Department spokeswoman would not say whether McCabe would be dismissed.

"The department follows a prescribed process by which an employee may be terminated," said the spokeswoman, Sarah Isgur Flores. "That process includes recommendations from career employees, and no termination decision is final until the conclusion of that process. We have no personnel announcements at this time."

McCabe declined to comment, but his friends told the Times that he denies any wrongdoing.

He had stepped down earlier this year and took a leave of absence until his scheduled retirement, the Times noted.

Fox News reported Republicans have questioned his connection with the Democrat Party. His wife ran as a Democrat for a Virginia Senate seat in 2015.
