Rep. Farenthold: House Could Impeach Obama on Birth Issue

By    |   Monday, 12 Aug 2013 08:44 PM

Rep. Blake Farenthold, a Texas Republican, says there are enough votes in the House to impeach President Barack Obama should anyone have lingering doubts about the legitimacy of his birth certificate.

But Farenthold thinks the issue is a lost cause.

In an exchange with a peeved constituent who complained about Obama's "fraudulent birth certificate" and accused Obama of criminal conduct, Farenthold said he gets asked about impeachment "a lot."

"… and I'll give you a real frank answer about that," he said. "If we were to impeach the president, we would probably get the votes in the House of Representatives to do it. But it would go to the Senate and he wouldn’t be convicted."

The exchange was posted on YouTube.

"… Unfortunately, the horse is already out of the barn on this," he conceded. "The original Congress, when his eligibility came up, should have looked into this and they didn’t. I'm not sure how we fix it."

However, he told the insistent voter, who claimed to have documentation proving "a felony has been committed," he'd "certainly take a look at it."

Farenthold's spokeswoman Meaghan Cronin told Talking Points Memo the lawmaker's comment "is being taken a little bit out of context and a little bit blown out of proportion."

"All I can say is that he was, like he would with any constituent, saying that he would look into it," Cronin said. "The time has passed, so it's like, 'Why even deal with it at this point?' It's a moot point, basically. It's a constituent that he was being compassionate to, one who was in a series of four or five town-hall meetings back-to-back. Whether it’s something he agrees with or doesn't, his job as a member of Congress holding these open forums is to listen to whatever people bring before him."

The video was first posted by BuzzFeed, according to Politico. The YouTube posting shows it was recorded at a town-hall meeting in Luling, Texas, on Aug. 10.

Obama's 2008 campaign produced a certification of live birth, a document legally accepted as confirmation of a birth and routinely used for official purposes. The White House published Obama’s long-form birth certificate in April 2011.
