In addition to opposition from Democrats to Education Secretary nominee Betsy DeVos, a surprising number from within her own evangelical Christian camp are speaking out against her, Politico reported on Monday.

Those evangelicals who have publicly opposed her, a relatively small group and mainly from the progressive strain, say she is not qualified to oversee the country's enormous education system, because she has never worked in any educational institution as an administrator or teacher.

That inexperience showed in her inability to answer basic questions about education in her testimony before Congress earlier this month in a confirmation hearing.

They are also concerned that DeVos, a strong advocate for school choice, will not fulfill what they consider a basic evangelical principle — to care for the most vulnerable children in the country's education system, namely under-resourced public school kids and especially those with special needs.

But even though DeVos is one of Trump's most controversial choices for a Cabinet position and Democrats initially had hopes of blocking her nomination, sources in the Senate say it is very unlikely the Democrats will muster enough votes from Republicans to reject her, Newsday reported.

Republican Senate leaders have worked to keep GOP members in line to confirm DeVos, and five of the Republican senators on the committee conducting her confirmation hearing have received donations from DeVos or her family members.

And as Democrats have tried to build up the pressure to reject her ahead of Tuesday's scheduled committee vote on her nomination, a Republican super PAC has launched an online advertising campaign defending DeVos as someone who "knows what it takes to repair our failing schools," The Washington Post reported.

The 30-second video accuses Democrats of "playing politics as usual" with DeVos' nomination by kowtowing to teachers unions.
