Dr. Ronnie Floyd, president of the Southern Baptist Convention, has agreed to a meeting with Donald Trump, the likely Republican presidential nominee, according to
Fox News.
Floyd said, in a post on Fox News, that while he would not make a presidential endorsement, he aims to be as informed as possible about each candidate and their platform. Because of that, he explained, "It is a privilege to be given the opportunity to meet with Mr. Trump."
He admits in the post that while he is concerned about comments Trump has made about women, minorities, and immigrants, not voting is simply not an option.
"At the same time, what do we do? Stay home? Absolutely not!"
Floyd emphasizes that Christians in America have both a "biblical responsibility," and the responsibilities of United States citizens.
The right to vote is a privilege that "men and women have died on the battlefield to give us," Floyd wrote. "I'm not walking away from that privilege."
Floyd said he would not be meeting Trump to listen to a speech. "We will be there to get to know one another — to talk."
He also mentioned that he would be willing to meet with Hillary Clinton, as well.
The Southern Baptist Convention leader noted that though the election is for president, not "Pastor-in-Chief," the election is still incredibly important to conservative evangelicals.
"This election is about the most significant religious freedom concerns in American history."
"I'm accountable to God, and I believe, I am accountable to my fellow Americans to vote," Floyd added, explaining his reasoning behind his own vote.
On the subject of the presumptive GOP nominee's religious beliefs, Floyd believes they're not an issue, claiming "That's God's business."
Another prominent evangelical, Albert Mohler of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, is also contemplating the possibilities of the upcoming election, according to the
Gospel Herald.
Mohler said in the Herald's report that a contest between Trump and Clinton requires careful thought and prayer.
"We are going to have to be thinking through and praying through how Christian faithfulness, biblical fidelity, gospel faithfulness, can be channeled into very real but finite political choices that are going to be presented to the American people on the presidential ballot this coming November," Mohler explained.
