President Donald Trump's decision to reach across the aisle to Democrats this week may eventually lead to conservative Republicans being blamed for a lack of progress on issues, commentator Erick Erickson wrote.

In a piece for The Resurgent, Erickson argued that the deal Trump struck with Democrats over a Hurricane Harvey aid package that included raising the debt ceiling has a familiar tone.

"Remember when Donald Trump blamed the House Freedom Caucus members for the failure to repeal Obamacare? Good times. All they wanted to do was actually repeal Obamacare," Erickson wrote. "The House Republican leadership drafted legislation that did not repeal it, but claimed it did. They got Trump to savage the conservatives in the House to try to get them to cave.

"It is going to happen again."

Erickson predicted that congressional leaders will try to work together this fall on legislation and will come to a stalemate, at which point they will tell Trump that the House Freedom Caucus — a far right group of lawmakers — was holding things up, just as they did with a healthcare bill earlier this year.

Lawmakers have a full plate for the fall, with issues such as healthcare, tax reform, and immigration all staring at them in the face.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday Trump's decision to work with Democrats occurred because he wants to "continue a momentum."
