Rep. Swalwell: FISA Court Shown 'Voluminous Amount' of Evidence

Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., said Tuesday the surveillance warrant on a Trump campaign adviser was given after the court was presented with a "voluminous amount" of evidence.

Although Republicans released a memo claiming the FBI relied on the dossier compiled by former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele for the FISA warrant on Carter Page, Democrats contend there was a great deal more evidence presented to the court than that, and hope to release a memo of their own to defend the FBI.

"Ours bolsters the credibility of the FBI, to point out that they actually did go through the correct process," Swalwell said on Fox News' "America’s Newsroom" on Tuesday.

He added the FBI disclosed the "likely political motivation" behind the dossier, which was funded by Fusion GPS, which was hired by Hillary Clinton's campaign.

"The court weighed that and still granted the application. . . . There was a bias, but the evidence was so overwhelming, the application was granted anyway," he said.

"The public sentiment was that they wanted the full picture, and Democrats didn't believe that in an ongoing investigation that the public, or subjects or witnesses in the investigation, like the White House and White House staff members, should see evidence that is being used in the case, which now is open and out there," Swalwell added.

"The larger issue is this is an ongoing investigation. The FBI is not above the law, they should be scrutinized, but after the investigation. . . . We're setting a precedent of sending evidence over to potential targets. You would never tell a suspect the evidence you had against them before you interviewed them."
