Rep. Swalwell: Dem Deal With Trump 'Right Thing to Do'

Democratic leaders made the right call on making a deal with President Donald Trump on the debt ceiling and providing recovery funding for Harvey victims, said Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., Friday.

"It was the right thing to do. We have to pay our bills, keep the government open and provide relief to those that were in Harvey's way," Swalwell said Friday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

Working with Trump provides "leverage" so Democrats can get other goals accomplished, the congressman said.

"We have the leverage and the energy of the American people behind us, and we have a very weakened president. And so despite (Democrats) being in the minority, you will see that a majority of Republicans will vote against keeping government open, which puts us in a much better position to act on behalf of our constituents," Swalwell said.

The House of Representatives approved a bill 316-90, as part of the deal struck between Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and Trump, according to CNN.

The deal combines funding for emergency hurricane relief with measures that increase the debt ceiling and keep the government open for three months.

"The president is pleased Congress acted quickly," a White House official said, according to CNN.
