Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt on Monday got a key endorsement from Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears before Tuesday's GOP Senate primary.
Schmitt is running to fill the seat being vacated by Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo.
"With the U.S. Senate on the ballot in 2022, Republicans must nominate the strongest conservative who can deliver a resounding victory in November, and that candidate is Eric Schmitt," Sears wrote in a statement to Newsmax one day before Tuesday's primary vote.
Sears, a Republican who assumed office in January, is the first woman to hold the office of lieutenant governor of Virginia and the first woman of color and first Jamaican-born American citizen elected to statewide office in the state.
"Eric Schmitt has fought to protect students' rights in schools, blocked Biden's forced vaccine mandates, and has been on the frontline fighting for American energy independence," she added. "Eric Schmitt has my strongest endorsement and I wish him the best in [Tuesday's] election!"
Schmitt has been Missouri's attorney general since 2019 and served as the state's treasurer and as a state senator before that.
He faces Rep. Vicky Hartzler, R-Mo., and former GOP Gov. Eric Greitens on Tuesday. Championing himself as an "America First fighter," Schmitt has accused Hartzler of voting for amnesty for illegal immigrants and has highlighted Greitens' extramarital affair that led to his resignation from office.
"As someone who has truly lived the American dream, Winsome Earle-Sears understands that we need proven conservative fighters in the U.S. Senate," Schmitt wrote in a statement to Newsmax. "It's an honor to have her support."
