Former Attorney General Eric Holder accused current Attorney General Jeff Sessions of having an "almost obsession with marijuana," the Washington Examiner reports.
Holder's remarks came during an address at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
The Examiner noted Sessions regularly criticizes marijuana use. It also pointed out his department is deciding whether to more strictly enforce marijuana laws.
"The Sessions almost obsession with marijuana, I think is the thing that's put the Justice Department in this strange place," said Holder, who was in charge of the department when the decision was made to allow states to regulate recreational marijuana.
Eight states have laws permitting recreational marijuana markets, the Examiner reported. And more than half of all states allow medical marijuana.
"The Department must be in a position to use all laws available to combat the transnational drug organizations and dangerous drug traffickers who threaten American lives," Sessions said, according to the Los Angeles Times.
