Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., may be the latest GOP nominee for speaker, but his roll call vote in the conference gathering Tuesday was less than Rep. Jim Jordan's, which makes it hard to see how he'll get a majority vote and win the gavel, Rep. Eric Burlison told Newsmax.
"There are people like me that are frustrated with what happened with Jim Jordan, and while I have been a team player and I will continue to be a team player, I think that this place needs to change and we're seeing the pains of that changeover," the Missouri Republican said on Newsmax's "Newsline."
Over the years, there has been an "embedded guard of individuals" who have "controlled the purse strings," Burlison said. "They're the reason why we're $33 trillion in debt."
Burlison said he does believe that Emmer, the House Majority Whip, has "leadership skills," but he still supported one of the other candidates for the speaker nomination. "I might be willing to come together on the floor but at this point I think there's a lot of frustration over the fact that we allowed the deep state swamp and the appropriators to scalp Jim Jordan."
Meanwhile, Burlison said he does think that there "a handful of candidates" who had been seeking the nomination who could bridge the gap "between the conservatives and the big spending part of the conference."
But until the moderate Republicans realize that "they're not going to get one of their own," said Burlison, "I think we can find somebody in the middle."
