EMILY's List has announced its support for law professor Katie Porter, who is running for California's 45th Congressional District, The Huffington Post reports.
Porter, who teaches at the University of California, Irvine, also won over Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Kamala Harris of California. Republican Rep. Mimi Rogers currently holds the seat.
"We need leaders on Capitol Hill who aren't afraid to stand up to Trump associates, big banks, and entrenched special interests who wield tremendous power over the White House, the Trump family, and a Republican-controlled Congress," Stephanie Schriock, EMILY's List president, said in a statement. "As California's financial watchdog in a historic mortgage settlement, Katie held bad actors accountable and won billions in relief for California homeowners."
EMILY's List has endorsed senators who are facing re-election in 2018, and have shown support for New Mexico gubernatorial candidate Michelle Lujan Grisham, but Porter is the first House candidate to win their endorsement.
Schriock added, "We can and will take back the House of Representatives ― starting by flipping seats from Republicans like Mimi Walters who allow abuses of power to go unchecked."
Also running for the seat are Porter's fellow UCI law professor Dave Min, and former congressional aide Kia Hamadanchy.
"I'm honored to have the support of EMILY's List," Porter told The Huffingon Post. "The stakes in this race against Congresswoman Mimi Walters couldn't be higher, and their endorsement is proof that the eyes of the nation are on this race."
