Rep. Cummings Calls Latest Scandals Involving Dems a 'Distraction'

Two developing scandals involving Democrats are merely a "distraction" from what should be the real issues, Rep. Elijah Cummings told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Wednesday.

The Democratic Maryland representative made the comments following reports that Democrats and Hillary Clinton's campaign paid for research into the so-called Donald Trump dossier, even though the party insisted it wasn't connected to what is widely perceived to be an inaccurate document, according to the Washington Examiner.

At the same time, the House Intelligence Committee announced an investigation into the Obama administration's decision to allow Russia to acquire access to 20 percent of North America's uranium supply, after the company going up for sale contributed to the Clinton Foundation, and after Russia paid Bill Clinton to deliver a speech.

Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, acknowledged that the two scandals concerned him.

However, he told MSNBC that "the American people need to understand the whole role that Russia is now playing in our elections and will continue to play."

Instead of paying attention to these latest controversies involving Democrats, Cummings warned that the American people "need to listen to [Sen. Bob] Corker, they need to listen to [Sen. Jeff] Flake," referring to the two Republicans who have severely criticized Trump.

Cummings agreed that there could be an investigation into the sale of the uranium company, but emphasized that the more important issue is the Trump campaign's relationship with Russia, because that is an indication that "our electoral system is under attack" and questioned what was the purpose now of going back to questions involving Hillary Clinton.
