Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., wrote a letter Monday calling on the Department of Defense to provide documents that he requested regarding response to hurricanes in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

"I am writing to request that you issue a subpoena to compel the Department of Defense (DOD) to produce documents we requested on a bipartisan basis more than four months ago relating to its preparation for, and response to, Hurricanes Irma and Maria in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands," Cummings wrote.

Cummings sent the letter to Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

In the letter, the congressman said that a response in December that produced some documents was "inadequate." The congressman asked Gowdy to put the matter up for a vote at the next regular committee meeting if Gowdy decided not to issue the subpoena himself.

"In order to conduct a thorough and credible investigation, our Committee must obtain all the documents we requested, including those related to the positioning of DOD (Department of Defense) resources and personnel, the significant delays in clearing roads of debris and reopening the San Juan airport, and the insufficient number of helicopters available to reach rural areas in the immediate aftermath of these hurricanes," Cummings wrote in the letter.

Hurricane Irma hit U.S. territories in early September 2017, and then Hurricane Maria hit two weeks later.

The congressman also wrote to Gowdy on Feb. 16, asking for the House of Representatives to probe the White House security clearance process, HuffPost reported.
