The move by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, to lead a group of fellow Republican senators in contesting the Electoral College certification of Democrat Joe Biden is merely a "stunt" by a future presidential contender, political analyst Karl Rove said Monday.
"Well, it's a PR gesture. A stunt," Rove told Fox News' "Outnumbered." "We had one, Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri, who said, 'I'm going to stop certification.' That was never going to happen because the House is not going to go along with it."
"Another aspirant for 2024, Ted Cruz decides well, I've gotta be in this game, so I'm going to call for an emergency commission that's going – in the next 10 days – resolve issues that we haven't been able to resolve conclusively in the last two months," Rove added. "And that ain't going to happen because the House is not going to go along with this.
"So this is sound and fury, signifying little or nothing, and it is not going to resolve the issue."
The Constitution required the president to be inaugurated Jan. 20, and there is no way a commission can make a determination before then, Rove said.
Republicans who have said they will join Cruz include: Sens. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn.; Ron Johnson, R-Wis.; John Kennedy, R-La.; Mike Braun, R-Ind.; Steve Daines, R-Mont.; James Lankford, R-Okla.; Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn.; Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo.; Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala.; and Roger Marshall, R-Kan.
About 140 House Republicans also plan to object, but a number of Republicans in both chambers have indicated they will not go along with the plan, making it likely doomed to fail.
