Hillary Clinton says she would not rule out challenging the legitimacy of the 2016 election if new information surfaces the Russians interfered even more deeply than currently known.

In an interview with NPR's "Fresh Air," the former Democratic presidential nominee acknowledges that move would be unprecedented — and "I just don't think we have a mechanism" for it.

"[Trump knew] they were trying to do whatever they could to discredit me with emails, so there's obviously a trail there . . . There's no doubt they influenced the election: We now know more about how they did that," Clinton said.

Pressed by host Terry Gross if she would "completely rule out questioning the legitimacy of this election if we learn that the Russian interference in the election is even deeper than we know now," Clinton replied: "No, I wouldn't rule it out."

Gross then asked what means there would be to challenge the election, and Clinton conceded there were none.

"There are scholars, academics, who have arguments that [the election should be challenged], but I don't think they're on strong ground," she said.

"But people are making those arguments," she said. "I just don't think we have a mechanism."

The month before the 2016 election, Clinton referred to Trump's comment he might not accept the election results as "horrifying."
