Republican campaign consultant and adviser Ed Rollins said there has been "no crime proven" to back up the call by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., for articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.
In an interview on Fox News' "America’s Newsroom" on Thursday, Rollins, who was the 1984 national campaign director for Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush called the House Democrats' impeachment push "an absurd process, and impeachment is a very important thing."
A video of the remarks was posted by Fox News.
Rollins said other than the "absolute racist" 17th President Andrew Johnson who "maybe should have been impeached," impeachment cases against American presidents have included a crime.
"I was part of the [former President Richard] Nixon team," he said. "There was a crime there — a burglary, a break-in, and a cover-up. In the case of Bill Clinton, there was lying under oath. There is no crime proven here."
Legal scholars and Democrats contend Trump committed bribery on his call to the president of Ukraine in which he asked for a "favor" — corruption investigations that would include Joe Biden and his son Hunter — amid a hold on U.S. military aid to the country.
"The four academics talking about what our forefathers intended on bribery and what have you," Rollins said. "Bribery was you walk in with a bag and cash and buy something. This isn't bribery no matter how much they want to argue. It's just not there."
Pelosi's call for the drafting of articles of impeachment followed a House Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday featuring four law professors, most of them witnesses called by Democrats, who laid the groundwork for formal charges to be filed against the president.
