Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell complimented comedian Sarah Silverman for her statement during her speech at the Democratic National Convention.

During her speech, Silverman told Bernie Sanders supporters who were refusing to support Hillary Clinton, "You're being ridiculous."

"No politician could have ever said what she said to the 'Bernie or Bust' people. It had a tremendous effect," Rendell told Politico.

Rendell said that he believed that Silverman helped defuse the tension in the convention between supporters of Sanders and Clinton, after the leaks of DNC emails that appeared to show favoritism toward Clinton

"I think by the end of the night what started out because of the email controversy as a horrible beginning for us had been significantly neutralized," Rendell said.

Rendell also credited Rep. Keith Ellison, who introduced Bernie Sanders before his DNC speech, for calling for party unity.

"Together, Democrats, we will make our voices heart in November when we defeat Donald Trump and elect Hillary Clinton the next president of the United States of America."

Ellison praised Sanders, saying, "Let's raise our voices in gratitude to a man who helped make this party greater than ever."

Rendell, a Democrat, was the governor of Pennsylvania from 2003 to 2011. He is now a news analyst for NBC.
