Republican Ed Gillespie has pulled ahead of Democrat Ralph Northam in the Virginia governor's race — leading by 3 points in a new poll released Saturday — three days before the election.

Gillespie, a former aide to President George W. Bush, leads Northam, the lieutenant governor, 40.4 percent to 37.4 percent in the survey of likely voters by Optimus/Firehouse Strategies.

The Republican firm queried 1,600 Virginians and has a margin of error of 2.4 percentage points.

Gillespie has been shaving Northam's lead in recent weeks, with the Democrat now leading him by only 1.8 points in the Real Clear Politics average, 46.9 to 45.1 percent, on Saturday.

Northam had been ahead of Gillespie by as many as 5 points in some surveys in the past week.

Gillespie has closed the gap by consolidating support among conservatives and supporters of President Donald Trump, The Washington Post reports.

The Friday polls boosting Gillespie included Rasmussen Reports, showing both candidates tied at 45 percent, and the Trafalgar Group, which put Northam only slightly ahead of the Republican, 44.6-44.1 percent.

Libertarian Cliff Hyra has long trailed far behind in the race.

In addition, Maryland GOP Gov. Larry Hogan was scheduled to headline a rally for Gillespie Saturday night in Northern Virginia.

"I think he’s a great leader in the Republican Party," Hogan told the Post on Thursday. "I’m looking forward to doing what I can to see that he wins next Tuesday."

Other top Republicans stumping for Gillespie last week included two high profile Latino legislators, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, the nation's first elected Latina governor.

They supported Gillespie after Latino and immigrant groups slammed his campaign ads against the violent MS-13 gang as racist and fear-mongering.

Trump has also endorsed Gillespie, saying on Twitter that he "will make a great governor" and slamming Northam as "very weak on crime."
