Ed Gillespie, the former chairman of the Republican National Committee, said if he lived in Alabama he could not vote for Republican Roy Moore or Democrat Doug Jones in Tuesday's contentious special election plagued by allegations of sexual misconduct.

Gillespie appeared on CNN's "The Axe Files" with David Axelrod and was asked about the race that has garnered national attention after several women accused Moore of various forms of sexual misconduct 40 years ago.

"If I were an Alabamian, I would not be able to bring myself to vote for Roy Moore. I couldn't vote for Doug Jones, but I wouldn't be able to bring myself to vote for him," said Gillespie, who lost to Democrat Ralph Northam in last month's Virginia gubernatorial election.

Gillespie said he feels it was "the right decision" for the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) to feed cash to the Moore campaign in the face of the allegations leveled at him.

In a pure political sense, however, Gillespie said it would be tough for the Republican Party to benefit in the long run if Moore wins the seat once occupied by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

"From a political perspective, I don't think the long-term pain would be worth the short-term gain of the seat," he said.

Still, Gillespie admitted the voters at the state level, Alabama included, likely do not appreciate people from outside their borders telling them how to vote.

"There is a sense that people from outside of our state or commonwealth [of Virginia], we don't want folks telling us who we can and cannot vote for," he said. "We'll make that decision ourselves. There's a backlash that results from that."

Polls in Alabama closed Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET.
