Donald Trump said Wednesday that he was considering two military generals for vice president — out of a list of 10 candidates — though he preferred a running mate with congressional experience to avoid "the route of executive orders."

"I like the generals," the presumptive Republican nominee told Kimberly Guilfoyle on Fox News. "I like the concept of the generals. There are two of them under consideration."

Trump declined to name the generals, though Guilfoyle mentioned retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn.

"We were looking for the political route to get bills passed. We don't want to go the route of executive orders. That's not the way it works.

"Frankly, we don't want to do the executive orders like [President Barack] Obama has been doing," Trump said.

"I'm thinking in terms of politicians, but we're looking at two generals."

Trump said that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was "certainly" in the running for the No. 2 slot — "He's a friend of mine, a great guy" — and that he would be campaigning with another top contender, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, in Cincinnati later Wednesday.

"Newt is Newt, you know? Great guy," Trump said. "Tough and smart, and just a fantastic guy."

He also praised two senators who withdrew from consideration on Wednesday: Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, who appeared with Trump Tuesday at a rally in Raleigh, N.C., and Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst.

Guilfoyle also referenced Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.

"We have about 10 people, some names that haven't surfaced yet, who have actually called me," Trump said in the telephone interview. "A lot of people are calling me that you wouldn't even think about.

"They want to have their name thrown into the hat, and we're going to look at some people," he added. "We have a lot of interest, believe me."
