Supporters of Donald Trump are flourishing on Reddit, one of the most visited Internet sites, especially among young men.
The forum contains user-run message boards, and specific topics are covered in categories called "subreddits," where Trump fans have created a popular gathering place,
MSNBC reports.
Postings of articles and often graphic images that praise Trump and slam his opponents have dominated Reddit. The subreddit r/The_Donald hit 52 million page-views in March, a distinct increase from February’s 12.6 million views there, and only 1.3 million page-views in January.
The next most popular candidate on Reddit is Bernie Sanders, at the subreddit r/SandersForPresident. His campaign uses the subreddit as a grassroots hub, and is in regular contact with its users.
The candidate’s supporters run the groups, not the campaigns. No other presidential candidate has a large fan base on the site.
Many Reddit users flock to the anti-PC, anti-establishment nature of the site's communities. The leader of the Trump subreddit is CisWhiteMaelstrom, who declined to give his real name for MSNBC’s story.
CisWhiteMaelstrom said he and the subreddit’s users enjoy venturing into other communities and stirring up arguments with "social justice warriors," a derogatory term for liberal activists.
"It’s so systematic and so predictable and so easy," Maelstrom said.
The Trump subreddit has some political content, such as postings about where to register to vote, but it’s intended as a gathering place for Trump supporters to have fun without being censored, said the MSNBC report.
Trump’s social media presence is part of the story of his success, according to
the New York Times.
That points to the "latent capacity of Trump supporters," said Micah Sifry of Personal Democracy Media in the Times article. "They’re there, and they might be excited to be given something to do."
