President Donald Trump uses social media because, “it is the only way to fight a VERY dishonest and unfair “press,” he tweeted Saturday.

"I use Social Media not because I like to, but because it is the only way to fight a VERY dishonest and unfair 'press,' now often referred to as Fake News Media," he said. "Phony and non-existent 'sources' are being used more often than ever. Many stories & reports a pure fiction!"

Trump has had a contentious relationship with the media, especially CNN and The New York Times, calling both outlets, "fake news" and "phony" on several occasions.

His post comes a few days after former President Barack Obama urged leaders not to split society with online biases.

"All of us in leadership have to find ways in which we can recreate a common space on the Internet," he said in an interview conducted by Britain's Prince Harry, broadcast on BBC radio Wednesday.

"One of the dangers of the Internet is that people can have entirely different realities, they can be just cocooned in information that reinforces their current biases."
