President Donald Trump on Thursday attacked Sen. John McCain for casting the deciding vote two months ago that killed legislation to repeal and replace key portions of Obamacare, calling the Arizona Republican's move "a very unpleasant surprise."

"We had a surprise from John McCain," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he returned to Washington from visiting sites devastated by Hurricane Irma in Florida. "John McCain, he came out of nowhere.

"And we had a surprise. It was a very unpleasant surprise.

"And now what are we looking at?" Trump asked. "We have people now talking about single-payer — and that's what we get.

"So, the Republicans have to stick together better," the president said. "They have the votes — and then John McCain changed his mind, pure and simple."

McCain, 81, the six-term senator who is undergoing treatment for brain cancer, cast the vote early on July 28 that killed the GOP plan for a basic repeal of the Affordable Care Act.

The legislation failed 49-51, falling just short of the 50 votes needed to advance it.

On Wednesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Vermont independent, proposed a plan to provide government-financed healthcare for all Americans.

President Trump cited the McCain example in arguing for his reaching out to Democrats in recent weeks.

"If the Republicans don't stick together, then I'm going to have to do more and more," he told reporters.

"By the way, the Republican Party agrees with me. The people out there definitely agree with me.

"If they're unable to stick together, then I'm going to have to get a little help from the Democrats — and I've got that."
