Attorney Rudy Giuliani is changing his tune about President Donald Trump's potential interview with special counsel Robert Mueller.

After weeks of saying he was leaning toward not allowing Trump to sit down with Mueller or a member of his Russia investigation team, the former New York City mayor and current Trump lawyer told The Washington Post on Wednesday he would rather have an interview occur.

"I guess I'd rather do the interview," Giuliani said. "It gets it over with; it makes my client happy. The safe course you hear every lawyer say is don't do the interview, and that's easy to say in the abstract. That's much harder when you have a client who is the president of the United States and wants to be interviewed."

There have been concerns Trump could walk into a perjury trap if he were to speak with Mueller's team, which is probing whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia and if Trump obstructed justice. Giuliani has been a vocal critic of any such interview since he joined Trump's legal team in April.

Giuliani has ramped up verbal attacks on Mueller's actions this month, and told the Post that Trump sometimes expresses indecisiveness about interviewing with Mueller.

"There have been a few days where he says, 'maybe you guys are right,'" Giuliani said. "Then he goes right back to, 'why shouldn't I?'"

Giuliani said last Sunday that Mueller's probe could be finished by Sept. 1, although a separate report claimed Giuliani made up the date.
