President Donald Trump is leaving the door open to rejoining the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) under the right circumstances.

Trump told CNBC this week at the World Economic Forum he would re-enter the United States in the trade deal that includes 11 countries.

"I would do TPP if we were able to make a substantially better deal," Trump said. "The deal was terrible, the way it was structured was terrible. If we did a substantially better deal, I would be open to TPP."

When the interviewer said he was surprised to hear Trump say that, the president replied, "Don't be surprised, no, but we have to make a better deal. The deal was a bad deal, like the Iran deal is a bad deal, these are bad deals."

Trump was in Davos, Switzerland at the World Economic Forum this week and met with several world leaders and officials from some of the world's biggest companies. On Thursday, for example, he held a round table dinner with more than a dozen company CEOs and top officials.

Trump said he is more willing to engage in bilateral trade deals "because if you have a problem, you terminate."

Former President Barack Obama signed the U.S. into TPP, which has yet to officially go into effect. Trump signed an executive order on the first Monday of his presidency last January to withdraw America's participation in the deal.

"Great thing for the American worker," Trump said at the time.

Trump also has been critical of the NAFTA trade deal that includes Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. He told CNBC that efforts to renegotiate the deal to make it more beneficial to the U.S. are ongoing.
