President Donald Trump on Monday said "a lot of" news stories are made up when asked about his decision to skip the upcoming White House Correspondents' Association Dinner, The Hill reports.

"I believe a lot of the stories are pure fiction, they just pull it out of air," he said in a Fox News interview video clip released Monday.

"Now, with all that being said, I just thought it be better if I didn't do the dinner. That doesn't mean I'm not going to do it next year. But I just thought it would be better if I didn't do it this year."

Trump's full interview will air on "Fox & Friends" Tuesday morning.

Trump made waves Saturday when he announced he would not attend the dinner on April 29, making him the first president in 36 years ago to miss the event. Typically, the president is the guest of honor at the event and is also roasted by the press. The dinner, first held in 1920, has long been dubbed a "nerd prom" that raises scholarships and honors White House coverage.

Politicians, celebrities and corporate leaders come together for the dinner, considered a highlight of the Washington social season.
