The co-chairman of Donald Trump's New York campaign says the presumptive nominee's sharp criticism of the Hispanic judge was "stupid."

In an interview with CNN's "Newsroom" program Monday afternoon, New York City Republican Councilman Joseph Borelli declared, "You have to lump me into the category of people who want to disavow what Trump said."

"I think it's fundamentally wrong," he said.

"I think he made a stupid comment and is better served by abandoning it and moving on," Borelli added. "This would have been a great week for Trump," referring to the endorsement of the presumptive nominee by House Speaker Paul Ryan.

Trump on Monday continued to defend his criticism of Curiel, whose Mexican heritage, Trump said, presents a conflict of interest in the Trump University lawsuits. Trump contends that given his vow to build a wall along the Mexican-U.S. border, Curiel is biased.

Borelli said that doesn't, however, mean the real estate mogul is a racist.

"I don't think Donald Trump is a racist by any stance," Borelli asserted. "I think he's got a lifetime of relatives, friends, business associates, employees that he's dealt with over the years that could attest to the fact that he is not a racist."
