President Donald Trump praised Kanye West and said he can envision campaigning with him.
His comments came during a telephone interview on Thursday with the hosts of television’s “Fox & Friends.”
Trump and West are scheduled to have lunch on Thursday.
"I tell you, first of all, I like him a lot.,” Trump said. “He has been a friend of mine. I've known him a long time. He’s a very different kind of a guy, I say that in positive way.
Trump said when West came out in support of him “my polls went up like 25 percent.”
“He’s got a big following in the African-American community -- a big, big following," Trump said. "I think he has (a strong following) in a lot of communities, but the polls went through the roof. I have not seen that, I think I can honestly say I’ve never seen that before to that extent. He is respected. He is really a great guy."
Asked whether he could envision campaigning with West, Trump said: “I could see it.”
The two are set to discuss prison reform today at the White House.
Trump was asked if Attorney General Jeff Sessions could end up standing in the way of prison reform.
“I make the decision, he doesn't,” the president said.
