President Donald Trump’s job approval rating has jumped to 44 percent, while 53 percent of voters disapprove of what he’s doing, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll reveals.
The numbers are an improvement from the April poll, which showed an approval rating of 40 percent, compared to 56 percent who disapproved of his job performance.
Here are highlights from the survey:
- 50 percent of registered voters want a Democratic-controlled Congress, compared to 40 percent who want the GOP to maintain its majority
- 63 percent of Democrats expressed the highest level of interest in the midterms, while 47 percent of Republicans did
- 44 percent credit Trump for the nation’s economic improvement; 27 percent say he doesn’t deserve much credit for it and 25 percent say the economy hasn’t really improved
- 48 percent say they are more likely to back a congressional candidate who promises to provide a check on Trump. 23 percent say they are less likely to support that type of candidate
- 22 percent say healthcare is the top midterm issue, followed by the economy and jobs at 19 percent and guns at 13 percent
- 45 percent say they are less likely to back a candidate who favors House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi for House Speaker, compared to 21 percent who would back that type of candidate
- 37 percent believe Trump’s campaign did collude or work secretly with Russia., compared to 34 percent who disagree. 28 percent say they did not know enough to say
- 53 percent say they have "some" or a "great deal" of confidence in special counsel Robert Mueller carrying through with a fair investigation. 40 percent had little or confidence in Mueller.
The poll, which was conducted June 1-4, surveyed 900 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
