President Donald Trump and California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, each called the other a clown Thursday night, The Washington Post reports.
“Democrats want to give welfare and free health care to illegal aliens,” Trump said at a rally in Las Vegas, Nevada. “How about this clown in California who’s running for governor? He wants open borders, and then he wants to give them health care, education, everything.”
Newsom wrote on Twitter in response: “Interesting description coming from the guy who is literally locking up kids like Pennywise,” a reference to the monstrous villain from “It,” and the Trump administration’s child detention policy.
According to The New York Times, there are just under 13,000 children in federal custody as of September 12, 2018.
Newsom holds a more than 20-point lead on his Republican opponent, John Cox, according to Real Clear Politics.
