Donald Trump made an appearance at a fundraiser held for an outside group that is able to take in unlimited contributions without having to disclose its donors, CNN
Those who attended the event for a 501(c)(4) nonprofit called Make America Great Again were asked to donate $10,000 to the group. The invitation explained that since the group was a nonprofit and not a Super PAC, donations were not required to be disclosed.
The event was held Sunday on the Jersey Shore at the home of real estate developer Charles Kushner and his wife Seryl. They are also the in-laws of Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump.
Those who attended the event were given the choice of having their money go to the super PAC or to the nonprofit group.
Trump's campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks told CNN that Trump "attended as a guest and did not solicit donations from any of the attendees," adding that "he is self-funding the campaign."
However, CNN notes that it appears that Trump's allies may be raising money for the purpose of having a large war chest for a possibly longer campaign than expected.
Trump attended a fundraising event hosted by the super PAC in New York in July, a campaign aide told CNN. He is also expected to attend another fundraiser in Massachusetts on Friday.
While Trump has said in the past that he doesn't need to do any fundraising because he has enough money to pay for his campaign, he said Sunday on CBS that "certainly, I would take contributions, I actually like the idea of investing in a campaign. But it has to be no strings attached. I don't want any strings attached."
