President Donald Trump’s personal attorneys hope that White House lawyer Emmet Flood won’t replace outgoing counsel Don McGahn, as they would rather have Flood working to fight Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe, CNBC reports.
According to sources who asked not to be named, because they were speaking about a confidential conversation, Trump’s lawyers think Flood would be better suited staying in his current position rather than assuming the leadership role at the White House counsel’s office, which McGahn will be vacating in the fall. Flood has worked hard to prepare for any subpoenas that may result from Mueller’s investigation, and has been having almost weekly meetings with Trump’s personal attorney Jay Sekulow.
Flood advised former President Bill Clinton during his own impeachment proceedings, was the White House’s lead lawyer under former President George W. Bush, and defended former Vice President Dick Cheney against a civil lawsuit brought by former CIA operative Valerie Plame.
"I appreciate the argument that this guy is your guy and you would rather not move him to the White House counsel's office. If you move him to the White House counsel's he's no longer the president's lawyer," longtime defense attorney Randy Zelin told CNBC. "I think you are gambling making him counsel to the White House, especially if you believe the Democrats will somehow back down from impeachment" due to Flood’s history of working with the party.
