Thomas Brunell has withdrawn his name from consideration to take over the top operational job at the U.S. Census Bureau following pushback over concerns he lacked government experience, Mother Jones reports.

Brunell was also a Republican, and would have been the first political government official hired as deputy director of the bureau. The job, according to Politico, has normally been held by a career civil servant with a statistics background.

Brunell is a political science professor at the University of Texas at Dallas, where his writing and research has mostly focused on redistricting and voting rights cases, and is the author of the 2008 book, "Redistricting and Representation: Why Competitive Elections Are Bad for America."

"This is worse than making him director," a former high-ranking Commerce Department official told Politico in November when the news outlet reported that Brunell's hiring would be announced soon. "There still is going to be hell to pay on the optics. The Democrats and civil rights community will go nuts."

Voting-rights advocates worried that Brunell would add questions to the 2020 Census that would cause a huge drop in minority response rates.

"It's breathtaking to think they're going to make that person responsible for the census," former Attorney General Eric Holder told Mother Jones in early January. "It's a sign of what the Trump administration intends to do with the census, which is not to take a constitutional responsibility with the degree of seriousness that they should. It would raise great fears that you would have a very partisan census run in 2020."
