President Donald Trump is facing pressure to lower the 50,000 cap on refugees amid warnings from Department of Homeland Security officials that they could have problems processing them in 2018, Politico reports.

The cap was imposed as part of Trump's travel ban, according to Politico. But DHS officials are expressing logistical concerns about processing that number in the coming fiscal year.

And by law, Trump must make a decision on refugee levels by the Oct. 1 start of the fiscal year.

Further complicating matters is the fact that DHS has been dealing with a backlog of asylum applications. In June, there were roughly 275,000 pending "affirmative" asylum cases — a 600 percent increase in the backlog compared to December 2013, Politico noted.

Although Trump is still reviewing options, officials anticipate he will lower the cap below 50,000. DHS is recommending a 40,000 cap.

"DHS does not comment on the Administration's internal deliberations with regard to the FY18 refugee admissions ceiling," department spokesman David Lapan said. "However, in setting the admissions ceiling, the factors taken into account include the workload capacity of all program partners, including the vetting agencies and the national security interests of the United States."

And those urging the cap be lowered cite the need to strengthen the vetting process for refugee applications to stop terrorists from coming into the U.S., The New York Times reported.
