GOP officials are trying to lower expectations for the less-than-polished "verbal gunslinger" Donald Trump in his first debate with Hillary Clinton, The Hill reported.

In a memo Thursday, the Republican National Committee's chief strategist Sean Spicer warned the GOP nominee won't come off as slickly as Clinton, who's spent a lifetime in politics.

"Trump hasn’t been running for president for 24 years, he's spent his career as a successful businessman," Spicer wrote, The Hill reported.

"Few are expecting the same level of polish from a verbal gunslinger whose rhetorical strength is speaking to the heart — and the gut — of the American people."

"Donald Trump is new to the format," Spicer added. "Trump's lack of formal, political, one-on-one debate experience gives Clinton a significant advantage."

According to The Hill, the campaign circulated a similar memo to supporters this week, noting Clinton's debating experience.

Trump has groused the debates are "gaming the refs" with the choice of debate moderators, while Team Clinton is worrying about the candidate getting tougher questions because moderators will "lower the bar" for Trump, The Hill has reported.
