Donald Trump, now the GOP's presumptive presidential nominee, said Wednesday he would consider Ohio Gov. John Kasich as a potential running mate.

Kasich has repeatedly said he has no interest in being anyone's vice president, but he also said he was interested only in the Oval Office. Kasich was set to announce Wednesday that he is dropping out of the race.

Trump told CNN's Wolf Blitzer it was "good" Kasich was dropping out and that "John is doing the right thing."

Though Trump said he would consider Kasich in his vice presidential vetting process, he added that even if Kasich doesn't end up on the ticket, Kasich will be able to help him as governor of Ohio. As Kasich himself has often pointed out, no Republican has ever won the White House without winning Ohio.

"John, whether he's vice president or not, I think he'll be very, very helpful with Ohio," Trump said.

With Texas Sen. Ted Cruz dropping out Tuesday night, Trump is the last candidate standing, and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Wednesday it is "pretty obvious" Trump will secure the 1,237 delegates needed to win the nomination.

Asked by Blitzer if the general election campaign started Wednesday, Trump answered in the affirmative.

"Essentially, it started, yeah," Trump said.
