President Donald Trump is counting on his base for support as he works with Democrats on a deal over immigration, The Hill reports.

Trump's aides and most prominent supporters have been defending the deal on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which some conservative commentators, like Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham, have blasted. Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, even said that Trump might break his base over the issue.

"They want you to think Trump has sold you out and thrown you under the bus," Rush Limbaugh said on his radio show Thursday. "The media wants you to believe that Trump is acquiescing to the Democrat agenda just so he can do deals and just so there can be something done."

An unnamed former campaign aide predicted that Trump's base will "ultimately… stay with him," adding, "ultimately, his base isn't predicated on repealing DACA. It's predicated on giving communities in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan a voice."

The president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which advocates for lower immigration levels, Dan Stein told the Hill, "Donald Trump would have been better off going onto Fifth Avenue and shooting someone. He said his base wouldn't care if he did that. The base cares about this."

"He succeeded in the primary because of immigration," Stein continued. "He would not have won the primary if he had taken a stance on DACA amnesty, [Texas Republican Sen.] Ted Cruz would have won. The base simply will not accept this."
